NFPA Fluid Power Challenge is an educational competition designed to introduce science and engineering to middle school students in a fun and friendly environment. Students learn about the basics of fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics), teamwork, organization and perseverance, as they experiment and design their own fluid power machine. The event includes a Workshop Day where teams come together to learn about fluid power and careers, build a pneumatic lifter and receive their challenge kits. Teams then take their kits (including tools and supplies), back home to work on solving the challenge problem, developing a portfolio, and then building their fluid power machine. On the Challenge Day, teams return with their tools to re-build their fluid power machines, and then compete in a timed competition. The teams of four to five youth will need to attend both days. The area 10 4-H/FFA Entomology Judging Contest was held on Dec. 5 in Goshen, IN. In order to participate in the State Judging contest held at Purdue University, 4-H/FFA members are required to attend area judging. The two top teams in the Junior Division and six top teams in the senior division may move on to the state contest. One additional way to qualify for the state contest is to have your individual score be one of the top five in your division. This year Argos had 2 Junior teams taking part in the area contest. Argos Dragonflies Black (Cory Hill, June Clark and Tristan Hutchison) placed 1st at area and Argos Dragonflies Gold (Kyndra Thayer, Makenzie Smith and Marisa Kline) placed 3rd. Cory Hill placed 2nd, June Clark placed 3rd, Makenzie Smith placed 4th and Kyndra Thayer placed 5th high individual.
